AMBLER ROAD

A rooftop addition in Islington, North London.

Conceived as a series of components (floating roof, glazed timber screen, sliding windows) dropped onto an existing flat roof, the proposal is for a second floor addition to a North London terraced house. The scheme was bound to meet some resistance from the Local Authority and was initially rejected by the planning department. However, planning permission was subsequently won on appeal to the Planning Inspectorate.

The proposal provided a new master bedroom and bathroom for a house where the main roof was too low for a traditional loft conversion. The roof is tilted up the corner so that it floats above the room, allowing the introduction of an east facing clerestory window.
