LANTIC HOUSE

A first floor addition to a classic 1970s house in Haslingfield, South Cambridgeshire.

Lantic House is one of a series of Forticrete blockwork houses designed in and around Cambridge by Saunders Boston in the 1970s, and is a fine example of the programmatic architecture of that period. The house, however, is surprisingly modest by modern standards and, because the roof sloped down to single storey at the front, lacked bedroom accommodation on the first floor. By reversing the pitch of the roof, a new space was created for a master bedroom, bathroom and study.

A carefully designed timber façade manufactured in a local joinery workshop with large sliding windows and fixed glazing gives the house a new 'face' and opens up views to the garden and surrounding village. Inside, bespoke built-in furniture from birch faced plywood continues the 1970s theme.
